You Need a Budget (YNAB) (pronounced Why-nab) is an American multi-platform personal budgeting program based on the envelope method. In 2013 it was the most popular personal finance software among Lifehacker readers.^[1]

Overview[edit]

YNAB is a software platform that can be used across desktop computers, the iPhone and Android operating systems, iPads, Apple Watches, and the Amazon Echo system^[2]. The system is easy to learn and use, but for users who want to learn more in-depth about the system, a book has been published^[3].

The general theory of YNAB is to 'give every dollar a job'. Each dollar in savings is saved for a specific purpose, such as annual car insurance payment, long-term housing repair fund, college savings, etc. The goal of YNAB is to consider long-term expenses every month to prevent spending 'surprises' and break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle.

YNAB 4 Includes Cloud Sync. I keep my YNAB software on my laptop, but I don't always have my laptop with me. For instance, a couple of weeks ago I went on a week long vacation. Because my intention was NOT to work, my laptop skipped the trip. On your desktop version of YNAB, double-check that Cloud Sync is activated under YNAB Preferences. Make a note of the file path under Cloud Sync. Also check that Cloud Sync is enabled for this particular budget under File Budget Properties. On your desktop version of YNAB, click File Save a Version. Official support for YNAB 4 will end October 31, 2019. This primarily impacts Mac users upgrading to Mac OS (Catalina), however, there appears to be a workaround. It's been almost two years since You Need a Budget switched to a web based, subscription model for their software.

While one could implement the same principles on their own, the software auto-imports transactions for users to categorize in one click. The software also displays financial reports to keep users informed about their finances at a glance. Lastly, the platform also has several open-source add-ons that offer additional reporting tools.

The latest version, dubbed 'The New YNAB' or 'nYNAB,' was launched December 30, 2015^[4] as a web-based application, with apps for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.

The previous version 4, YNAB4, was released in June 2012. Version 4 was a desktop-based application available for Windows and Mac OS, with apps for iPhone and Android devices. Storing the budget file in DropBox allowed synchronization between the desktop and mobile applications. Version 4 was maintained through 2016, and the company ended support for Version 4 in October 2019.

YNAB 3 (released December 2009) ran on multiple platforms using the Adobe AIR runtime,^[5] and previous versions included a Microsoft Excel/OpenOffice.org Calc spreadsheet implementation (dubbed YNAB Basic and discontinued in July 2009) and a Windows-only executable under the name YNAB Pro (discontinued in December 2009).

YNAB for iPhone was released in 2010 and runs on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It is not a standalone budgeting application but is instead designed to complement the YNAB for Desktop application. A version tailored for iPad and including budgeting support was released in 2014.^[6][7] YNAB for Android was released in September 2011.^{[citation needed]}

1. Update your Undebt.it account balance. This feature will keep your debt account balance current with whatever YNAB has. This means that if you have your credit card account in YNAB tied to your online account, everything will update automatically.

Log into your Undebt.it account and go to the YNAB Sync page (it's located in the My Account link section and also on the left-hand menu) and click on the 'Link YNAB Account' button.

I have updated the privacy policy to reflect the new YNAB integration features and how your data is handled. Undebt.it never has access to your bank account login credentials at any time.

1. Ignore the account: Undebt.it will not do anything with the account.
2. Add the YNAB account to Undebt.it: This will create a new Undebt.it debt account and add it your list of active debts. Once the account is created, go to the debt details page for the new account and change the due date, account type and any other settings that YNAB does not store.
3. Assign the YNAB account to the proper Undebt.it account: Use the pulldown list to match each account as needed. The current Undebt.it balance is shown in the list, next to the account name.

If you are mapping YNAB accounts to new Undebt.it accounts, there is an option labeled 'Sync transactions for new accounts?' that applies to you. Turn the option on to bring over the transaction history along with the account balance. New transactions will be automatically added to Undebt.it during the syncing process.

Syncing Information

Your account will automatically sync itself roughly every day or two, so there is no action required on your part. However, if you want to manually sync your YNAB data, go to the Account List page. Click on the 'YNAB Sync' button updates all of your linked accounts.

There is also a similar button on the Debt Details page, but this one only updates the selected account. The preferred method is to use the one on the Account List page to cut down on API traffic since it updates all of your accounts at once.

Un-linking Accounts

If you want to stop an individual account from syncing with YNAB, just go to the Debt Details page and click the button labeled 'Unlink From YNAB'.

Handling Payment Transactions

If you have the YNAB integration turned on, then there are 3 ways to handle payment transactions. It's important to just use one of these methods for each debt account.

• Import from YNAB: (as shown above) Have the payments flow from YNAB into Undebt.it automatically.
• Autopay: This is the standard 'Autopay?' option on the debt details page. The payment transaction is automatically recorded in Undebt.it based off of the planned payment amount (regardless of what YNAB has).
• Manual: You can create manual payment transaction entries on the debt details page in the 'add a transaction' section.

For example, let's say you have a credit card in YNAB that is linked to your lender. If you want to have everything automatically brought over into Undebt.it, you would want to use the import from YNAB option. However, if you have a loan that is not linked to YNAB, you will want to use the standard autopay or manual options.

Some Important Notes Regarding the Integration

YNAB reserves the right to revoke access to their API at any time. This means that this feature can stop working sometime in the future and there is nothing I could do to fix it.

If you try out the integration and it's not working out for you, you can revoke Undebt.it's access to your YNAB account by logging into your YNAB account, then go to Settings >Authorized Apps and click on the Revoke link.
